The glorious “lake season” is in full swing when Art in the Finger Lakes opens. More than many of the Center’s exhibits this show is a destination for those who fall in love with the area and appreciate the experience. The two featured artists in this exhibit, Barbara Doyle – 2024 Artist of the Year – and Maureen Church are masters in capturing the magic of our beautiful landscape. For those who would love a memento of this locale, no two can do it in a more charismatic way.
Barbara Doyle
BA in Art Therapy with continuing study at the Memorial Art Gallery Creative Workshop, Cape Cod School of Art, watercolor courses with Wendy Gwirtzman. Exhibits have included Gallery on Main Street, Ontario County Arts , Pat Rini Rohrer Gallery, Artizanns in Naples, Roselawn Galleries in Pittsford, West End Gallery in. After many years of tending to a large family Barbara began a new adventure. Pen and ink drawing was her first venture into art since college days. House portraits were the subjects. An oil painting here and there went into the mix.The next step was watercolor homes. Then she began to paint portraits in oil and pastel. After many years of painting landscape in pastel a Cape Cod course in Impressionism changed her point of view. In oil painting she began to use the color theory of the Impressionists. That became her style for all mediums. She finds all subjects interesting, from still life, florals, landscapes, figuratives. Watercolor has now become the primary medium with its many variations of technique. She finds it interesting to watch water and paint go their own way with some control.
Maureen Church
Maureen Church, a lifelong resident of Rochester, NY, is an oil and mixed media painter whose work captures the essence of the Western New York landscape. Her artistic journey began with formal training at Alfred University and Nazareth College, leading to a rewarding career as an art educator. Since retiring in 2017, she has devoted herself to painting full-time from her studio in Rochester’s Neighborhood of the Arts. Primarily a plein air painter, Maureen finds inspiration in the ever-changing light and atmosphere of the Finger Lakes region. Her process begins with intimate sketchbook studies created on location, capturing the raw energy and fleeting moments of a vineyard vista or a wooded trail. “These delicate sketches serve as the initial sparks of inspiration,” she explains. “They reflect the authenticity of my encounters with nature.” From these sketches, Maureen transitions to working en plein air with oils, further exploring the nuances of color, value, composition, and texture. The culmination of her process unfolds in her studio, where these impressions evolve into larger oil and encaustic paintings. These offer a more immersive blend of the raw energy of nature with her own introspective lens. Maureen is an active member of the Genesee Valley Plein Air Painters, and her work has been juried into galleries and sold locally, nationally, and internationally. She is a permanent artist member at the Pittsford Fine Art Gallery, where her paintings can be seen daily. You can learn more about her art at www.maureenchurch.art
