David Gardner

Dave has been drawing, painting, designing, and making art for more than 50 years. He was trained as an architect at the University of Minnesota. Along with his architectural training, he took fine art classes. After graduation he continued his art training at the Minneapolis College of Art & Design. “Architectural as well as graphic art education focusses on design. To communicate a design idea you use perspective drawing, composition, and color. You must also understand how to use form, texture and the effects of light. These skills are invaluable whether you are an architect, a commercial illustrator or an artist.” Dave has worked as all of these in Minneapolis and hometown Rochester. His Rochester-based architectural firm designed many buildings around New York and surrounding States for 26 years before being purchased by a large national Engineering and Architectural firm in 2017. Dave retired from architecture in 2020 and began his next chapter as a full-time artist. “The act of creating art has been the theme of my life.” Dave has made art a lifelong study art taking numerous classes and workshops from notable artists. He has taken classes over many years at the Rochester Memorial Art Gallery and other local venues studying with Dick Kane, Jeanne Lindsay, g.a. Sheller and Fred Lipp. Nationally he has taken workshops around the country with David Taylor, Steve Rogers, Skip Lawrence, Ted Nuttal, Eudes Correia and Mary Whyte to name a few. “I find teaching a win-win undertaking because you always learn more about any topic when you teach it!” Dave has been teaching several levels of watercolor painting, portrait painting and drawing at the Memorial Art Gallery’s Creative Workshop since concluding his architectural career. He also teaches workshops and demonstrates for various art groups around the region. Dave’s medium is watercolor which he loves for its vibrancy and transparency. He uses watercolor in a spontaneous or alla-prima fashion leading to looser and impressionistic works. His paintings usually have a narrative quality, and many times tell a story. He enjoys using the play of light and carefully coordinated color harmonies along with carefully designed compositions. He belongs to many local and national watercolor associations. His work has invited to many watercolor shows and he has received both numerous local and national awards. He also paints plein air and remains active in those groups as well.
